Life Saving Awards
On Dec. 5, 2022 the Fort Atkinson Police Department received a 911 call for a man who had fallen and was not breathing. The call was answered by Telecommunicator Hannah Kleven, who paged out an ambulance to respond to the scene.
"During that time Hannah returned back to the caller and started doing Telecommunicator CPR, leading the caller through CPR on the person," said Police Chief Adrian Bump. "She was able to do that while handling multiple other things that were going on in the dispatch center."
While handling multiple communications in the dispatch center Kleven completed two rounds of CPR before the first officer arrived on scene.
Officer Brett Dunkleberger arrived on the scene, checked for a pulse, could not find one, and took over CPR from the caller. Officer Amelia Adsit arrived with an AED.
"While Officer Dunkleberger continues CPR, Officer Adsit sets up the AED placing it on the victim and they never lose a beat. A shock was administered and chest compressions were continued," he said.
After that, the color started to return to the victim's face and officers found a pulse. Shortly after that Fort Fire Rescue arrived on scene and took over.
"It's a really great example of great teamwork between two officers and a dispatcher that really made an impact," Bump said.
The person the officers helped made a full recovery and is doing well today, Bump said.
These awards are written and approved by all the members of the Fort Atkinson Police Department. Captain Chad Lange wrote the recommendation for the award.
