Snow removal update

The Department of Public Works started snow operations at 4 a.m. this morning and has completed the first round of snow clearing throughout the city. This activity included scraping of accumulated snow and salting all predetermined locations throughout the city. Public Works crewmembers will complete one more pass to clear and salt all Collector and Arterial Streets, the Hospital area, and Emergency Management locations before 1 p.m. The crewmembers will then break until the majority of the heavier snowfall nears an ending point. At 5 p.m. they will return to re-clear, and salt, the entire City of Fort Atkinson roadways. Expect the trucks to return to service on the roadways at 5 p.m. and continue until the City has been cleared and salted.

Last night the Department declared, a snow emergency from 12 p.m. today to 8 a.m. Friday. Please keep in mind that parking on the roadways between those is prohibited until such times as all of the roadways have been cleared face of curb to face of curb. This will assist the city in the clearing and removal of snow during this winter event.

With a drastic dip in temperatures, the salt applied to the roadways will take much longer to work and there may be slippery locations that remain slick until warmer temps reactivate the applied salt, but rest assured the department is applying salt when and as we can. The Public Works Department appreciates your cooperation and will continue to work diligently to maintain the roadways as best as possible.
